Generically speaking short-term relationships are not so intense with fewer commitments and some may argue complications. A short term relationship could be anything from a holiday fling to a longer relationship in which neither individual is willing or wants to plan too far into the future.

There is no set time limit on what could be classed as a ‘short-term’ relationship or whether or not it will ever progress into a longer term relationship usually indicated by planning a future with your partner or possibly moving in together.

Long Term

A long term relationship could incorporate a number of different things, and as no two are the same, the criteria of what makes a ‘long-term’ relationship is vast. It could represent a long period of time, though it is difficult to label a partnership in terms of period, instead what may be more appropriate is how connected you feel with that person and if you can see them in your future.

If this has been discussed and agreed then the relationship has moved from being short term to long term.

One night stands

The term ‘one night stand’ originally referred to when a guest group performed for one night only in a theatre show. However it is now more commonly related to a single sexual encounter between people who have not normally known each other for extensive periods of time, when it is clear that neither party has any immediate intentions of the encounter developing into a long term relationship.

There can be a number of serious issues that arise with one night stands, including risks of getting sexually transmitted diseases, however less regarded issues include depression and issues with commitment later on in life, patterns of cheating are higher amongst people who have participated in a large number of ‘random hookups’ and therefore the decision to get involved should not be taken lightly.

Instead it may be better in the long run to find someone you like and at the end of the night rather than going home with him or her, leave them wanting more!

Long Distance Relationships

Long distance relationships are often built upon foundations of determination, understanding but possibly more significantly trust. Both people in a long distance relationship need to be flexible and reasonable about their expectations and requirements. This isn't to say that love doesn't strike though!

It is often difficult making a local relationship work but having distance between the two individuals involved can be even more of a challenge.
